Selecting Your Autolite Plug

  1. Determine thread diameter, length and whether tapered or gasket seated.
  2. Select gap style.
  3. Select heat range.
  4. Adjust fuel mixture and spark advance for maximum performance.
  5. Inspect plugs and pistons for evidence of detonation or abnormal combustion or excessive temperature.
  6. Unless major modifications are made to the engine, which increases the horsepower or operating range significantly, stay with the same plug type after final heat range selection.

*Autolite Racing Spark Plugs That Have The "AR" Prefix Are Equipped With The "Cut Back Ground Electrode" For Improved Ignitability And A "Larger Ground Electrode" For Better Heat Transfer.

Even with very hot ignition systems it is still very important to keep the plug gap around .034 especially in high compression applications.

Higher compression squeezes the spark and if the gap is too wide it will cause the engine to misfire.


If Reach is Too Short:
Shrouded gap may misfire. Exposed cylinder head threads will collect combustion deposits and could cause pre-ignition.



If Reach is Too Long:
Pre-ignition may result from over heating exposed plug threads. Carbon deposits on exposed plug threads can cause damage to threaded cylinder head when plug removal is attempted. Seize engine damage (piston can hit the plug).
